An old manor house beautifully converted into a family-run comfortable little hotel in Bruges, Belgium. Friendly and efficient service. Situated in a quiet central street close to the Grand'Place and the historic town center. Bruges hotel parking is very convenient at the Prinsenhof, where private parking is directly connected to the hotel, with entry from the Helmstraat. Arriving in Belgium I was immediately enchanted with the country and its people .... Our discovery tour started in Bruges, a town which is arguably the prettiest in Belgium. One cannot help but draw comparisons with Venice as well as Amsterdam. Bruges is charming, full of history and tradition, and, unlike today's Amsterdam, is spotlessly clean.
Founded in the 4th century on waterways connected with the North Sea, it became a sheltered port for vessels
trading along the channel coast. Soon it became a major trading post and growing constantly, achieved commercial
prominence and political importance.
Over the centuries Bruges became a wealthy, cultured and elegant small town and today it still fits this
description. In its heyday it boasted 150,000 residents, 52 trade guilds and 17 consulates. Today, the inner
town that lies within the Venetian-style canals has 40,000+ inhabitants living in the lovely timeless brick
houses with their framed windows and Amsterdam-style stepped gables.
The ships have gone and tourism now replaces much of the maritime trade as the town's most important source
of income. Yet here one is not swamped by an avalanche of visitors as one might be in Venice, and somehow
there is less promotional hype and hard sell from the local shopkeepers and residents. The entire medieval historic centre of Bruges has been recognised by UNESCO as a world heritage site and Prinsenhof is a part of it. Peacefully hidden in a small cobbled street, our accommodation doesn't resemble a conventional hotel from the outside, but its charm lies in its comfort and tranquillity and the genuinely warm greeting of Katrien, Thierry and ... 'Roef', the fun and so clever Jack Russell. A must-see and stay ! The Prinsenhof is not only one of the finest hotels in Brugge, but also one of the best hotels in Flanders. | |
