For six centuries the Kings of France were crowned at Reims and celebrated their coronations with Champagne. But, for everyday consumption they favoured the wines of Burgundy.

Kingdom, County, Duchy and finally French department (21) since 1790, Burgundy is one of the richest regions of France. Its historic towns and villages are the product of many centuries of civilization as well as a place of exchanges and encounters.

For some, Burgundy represents the site of Romanesque architecture's finest masterpieces like Vézelay, Autun and Cluny. For others, it's a mosaic of landscapes studded with forests and waterways, and dotted too with the châteaux of the Age of Enlightenment. But for many, Burgundy is first and foremost the prestigious domain of those illustrious wines coming from the Côte d'Or which is divided into two main areas. The Côte de Nuits (northern part) produces superb reds (Chambertin, Musigny, Clos Vougeot, Romanée-Conti, etc...). The Côte de Beaune (southern part) gives also great reds (Pommard, Corton, etc...) but the area of Puligny-Montrachet is revered as the source of the finest white wines in the world with five fabulous Grands Crus : Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Batard-Montrachet, Criots-Batard-Montrachet and Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet.

... but wine is horribly complicated ... and tasting is obviously one of the
greatest pleasures producer Olivier LEFLAIVE has to offer at Puligny-Montrachet.

Born in the vineyards, this Burgundian who clearly loves his wines is a great character, full of joie de vivre and most entertaining company. As well as running the family business winegrowing estate and its already renowned Table-d'Hôtes, he has recently undertaken the exciting task of restoration and conversion of an authentic 17th century mansion into “La Maison d'Olivier Leflaive” with only a select few spacious rooms.

Quietly set in the heart of the village this old, pretty Bourguignone mansion has much charm, retaining many original features and offering carefully chosen furnishings to blend well with the surroundings. This new facility is a perfect opportunity to share in the life of impassioned vignerons, always ready to explain how the work in the vineyards and in the cellars is what makes great wine.

Don't hesitate to drive a few extra kilometres to eat there or pause for the night, in such an open country that has been preserved almost exactly as it was some centuries ago - yet only 12 km from beautiful but bustling Beaune and the wine road of Burgundy which reads like a glorious wine list.

Finally, why not just sit down with one great bottle, especially after the harvest in the fall when the vine leaves turn glorious shades of gold, crimson, amber and scarlet ... what a marvellous sight in sunny weather !

LA BOURGOGNE
 
Ancien Royaume de Lothaire au 9ème siècle, puis Duché prestigieux, elle est terre de légendes et terroir d'élection pour la vigne.

Côtes de Nuits, Côte de Beaune ... c'est la Côte d'Or que le Monde entier envie ou adore. Bien sûr c'est Dijon et Beaune, mais surtout des noms qui font rêver car à jamais ancrés dans le patrimoine mondial de l'humanité. En effet, qui ne connaît Pommard dont l'origine remonte à la plus haute Antiquité ? Mais aussi Corton, Clos Vougeot, Richebourg, Chambertin, Chablis, Meursault, Montrachet ou autres « attachés » tels les Bienvenues - et Criots-Batard, tout comme encore les Chevalier et Puligny, pour ne citer que quelques appellations ou Grands Crus mythiques produits par cette « Bienheureuse Bourgogne ... digne d'être appelée la mère des hommes, depuis qu'elle possède un tel lait dans ses mamelles » (selon Erasme).

Pour les connaître, rien ne remplace les moments passés à proximité d'une cave. Alors de la Suisse, du Benelux, d'Italie ou d'Espagne voire même de Paris, piquez droit sur Beaune ou Chagny et filez vite vous mettre au vert (et au verre) à Puligny-Montrachet:

La table d'hôtes ouverte au rez-de-chaussée de sa grande demeure de pierres blondes, traditionnelle et bourgeoise à souhait, est le parfait exemple du bonheur de vivre. Cet homme, né les pieds dans la vigne, veille sur tout avec un véritable amour et une passion sans bornes pour ses propres vins qu'il travaille en cave et que vous dégustez à sa table.

A la recherche, à sa manière, d'un temps qu'il croyait perdu, il a imaginé un hôtel très cosy :

C'est au coeur même du petit village de Puligny-Montrachet, et très au calme, que se cache " La Maison " dans une élégante et authentique bâtisse du 17ème siècle. Les chambres sont toutes de véritables alcôves de charme équipées d'un confort ultra moderne irréprochable (Internet, écran plat, lecteur DVD etc...).

Connaissant l'homme, son souci du détail, ses compétences, ainsi que la grande gentillesse de l'accueil et l'ambiance extrêmement conviviale tant à la Cave qu'à la Table, il n'est guère surprenant que " La Maison d'Olivier Leflaive " soit devenue aussi rapidement ce lieu de séjour très prisé de tous les amateurs de Bourgognes ... et de la Bourgogne.
