In the Footsteps of Lamartine
Needless to say the vineyards near the Hotel Macon La Barge are the region's most obvious attraction. Moreover, each year in May there is an extraordinary wine fair attracting thousands of devotees and connoisseurs from all over the world. If you are interested with older traditions you should head into the wine-producing Mâconnais and Beaujolais and even up to the cattle-country of the Charollais.
Evidence that man has lived in this region since prehistoric times has been found at Solutré which has now given its name to an archeological period. This rocky escarpment (about 45 minutes to the top) that rises up out of the Pouilly-Fuissé vineyards offers an outstanding panorama, stretching from the Saône valley and the Bresse to the Jura. "La Roche de Solutré" is now very popular since the late French Socialist President François Mitterand used to climb it every Pentecost's monday until he died. This pilgrimage became some sort of ritual during which it was obvious all close friends and family, ministers and courtiers had to gather there and be seen following him. La Roche de Solutre is approximately 11 km (7 miles) from Hotel Macon Chateau de la Barge.
Cluny (29 km / 18 miles NW of Mâcon) also is well worth a visit. The abbey, founded at the beginning of the 10th century by William the Pious, was then famous and powerful throughout the Christian world surpassing popes and kings in influence. This little town, set in a lovely rolling countryside, has a wealth of medieval and renaissance buildings, as well as a number of interesting Romanesque houses. It takes approximately 25 minutes by car to reach Cluny from the Hotel Macon Chateau de la Barge.
When it comes to the great Romantic poet and statesman Alphonse de Lamartine, you can't miss him in Mâcon where he was born. A handsome 18th century houses the museum dedicated to his memory. You can visit his family castle in Saint-Point, on the banks of the river Valouze, where the Lamartine legacy is most celebrated and where he is now buried. Don't neglect the house (now a private museum) in Milly where he spent his childhood and the small villages of Bussières and Pierreclos that played such a major part in his poet's life. The experience deeply moved Lamartine, who found it a powerful source of inspiration. "Milly ou la terre natale" but also "La vigne et la maison" are amongst his finest poems.
Wherever you are coming from - Calais or Geneva, the Italian and Spanish borders or the French Riviera - you should consider these surroundings of Mâcon. It's extremely easy to reach the charming and relaxing Hotel Macon Château de la Barge which is the ideal base for you to discover all the treasures this part of southern Burgundy has to offer.
