The USS Midway was commissioned way back in 1945 and served with distinction until 1991 when she was retired. She began her final tour on 7th June 2004 when she was opened to the public as the USS Midway Museum at the Navy Pier in downtown San Diego.
Visitors may tour the ship's flight deck, hangar bay, bridge, mess hall, flight control area, enlisted and junior officer quarters, the sickbay, and some areas of the engine rooms. Self-guided audio tours are provided with admission.
On the flight deck and in the hangar are on display over 25 restored naval aircraft, from the World War 2 vintage
SBD Dauntless dive bomber to the F14 Tomcat. Other aircraft on display include the
A-4 Skyhawk, the
F-4 Phantom II and a
Huey Gunship helicopter.
