“ A most romantic getaway ”

Luxembourg City, the Grand Duchy's 1000 year old capital has a real cosmopolitan flair but with so many international organizations of all kinds (including banks, trusts, holdings, and EC Officials) it is no wonder that there are so many sleeping factories catering to the come-and-go crowd who need a bed, a modem and a return-flight reservation.

If you have to do business, but also at the same time would love to relieve the day's stress with style and refinement, you'll need at least one night at the Hotel Albert Premier.

Ideally situated in the quiet BEL AIR residential area, this hotel is close to all major activities and the pedestrian mall of the old city. It's also just a few minutes away from the Central railway station or the Kirchberg European Center that houses the European Parliament.

Albert Premier feels really like a private home. Very cosy, very raffiné. Its ambience and service are very personal, and its elegant clientele appreciate the calm.

The small entrance hall successfully conveys the atmosphere of its origins - an aristocratic nineteenth-century town-house. The adjacent "bar-lounge-library" with open-fire place has faint echoes of a comfortable gentleman's club and opens onto a small garden-terrace, where breakfast and afternoon tea are served. The bedrooms, not two alike, are furnished with antique furniture and equipped with very high quality large bed and reputed fabrics. Some of them even offer a romantic working fireplace and a corner sitting room. Of course, such deluxe rooms have deluxe bathrooms too, as handsome and individual as the bedrooms they accompany. There is also a fitness centre and a sauna, where the Asian-style "chaises longues" were modelled after ones at "Les Prés d'Eugénie", Michel Guérard's spa.

If you have time, visit Luxembourg old town and especially the impressive labyrinthine "Bock Casemates", 23 km worth of tunnels dug in 1746 through the sandstone base upon which the city rests. During WWI and WWII they were used as bomb shelters for 35,000 people and they are now listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Only a small section (17 km) is open to the public and some of the tunnels peek out with stunning views of the city.

This little country also offers excellent white wines in the Moselle valley which stretches from Wasserbillig to Schengen. The Elbling grape, the most well known, has been yielding a dry acidic wine since Roman times.

Last but not least ... Luxembourg's turbulent past remains alive through the impressive number of castles, partially in ruins, partially restored with a great deal of love, that can be admired around the country such as :

• Beaufort, situated on the site of a Roman fort, built around 1200
• Bourscheid, built in the 10th century above the Sûre valley (night lighted)
• Clervaux, built in the 12th century it houses now "The Family of Man", the prestigious photographic exposition of Edward Steichen
• Vianden, the largest and finest feudal residences of the Romanesque and Gothic periods in Europe, and cradle of the Orange-Nassau Dynasty.

All those exciting tourist sights, including the Müllerthal (Little Switzerland) centred around the old Christian town of Echternach, are within a radius of approx. 40 km from Luxembourg city, making the HOTEL ALBERT PREMIER an ideal base for touring and lodging in a world of distinguished beauty.

Certes, ce n'est pas un exercice de style facile que d'évoquer un lieu de séjour en deux ou trois lignes. Il a cependant le mérite d'être réalisé avec exactitude quoique l'éloge relève tout de même d'une certaine parcimonie.

En effet, ce qui est le plus surprenant, en arrivant devant le seuil même de ce bel immeuble bourgeois des hauts de Luxembourg, c'est que l'on ressent là une presque certitude de bonheur tout proche ... et qui va se réaliser très vite. Il existe ici un trésor bien visible, c'est la spontanéité et la qualité de l'accueil. Tout y est simple, joyeux, franc et naturel. Vous n'êtes pas ici dans un hôtel !

Car, à l'image de la devise du pays, ces hôteliers ont décidé de rester ce qu'ils sont, de véritables hôtes, alors que beaucoup d'autres ici ont choisi de ne plus être que des gestionnaires de bilans. Il est vrai qu'avec plus de 250 établissements financiers, 6.000 holdings ou trusts et une ville de surcroît construite sur un rocher ...

Mais le Grand-Duché, c'est aussi une vingtaine de châteaux historiques dans un rayon de plus ou moins 40 km de la capitale, tels VIANDEN dont les origines remontent au 3ème siècle, ou CLERVAUX qui abrite aujourd'hui la célèbre exposition " The family of Man " (Edward Steichen), ou BOURSCHEID (1095) surplombant la vallée de la Sûre ou encore BEAUFORT (1200) situé dans le Müllerthal, l'une des plus belles régions du pays, surnommée à juste titre la " petite Suisse luxembourgeoise ".

C'est aussi toute la superbe vallée de la Moselle qui s'étire durant 40 km, de Schengen (plus connu pour son " espace " et son château " crayonné " par Victor Hugo) à " ce qui fut la frontière allemande " (Wasserbillig). Elle est réputée depuis l'époque romaine pour son Elbling, vin blanc sec et acidulé, ou autres Rivaner et Auxerrois. Outre les petits villages typiques de Ehnen, Wellenstein, ou Ahn, les deux grands centres viticoles restent Grevenmacher et Remich à 25 km de Luxembourg.

Ainsi, telle une gargouille millénaire dominant avec majesté les verdoyantes vallées de l'Alzette et de la Pétrusse, la capitale luxembourgeoise s'avère être une base idéale pour rayonner jour après jour et en toute quiétude à travers ce " Gutland "(bon pays) dont les habitants pratiquent indifféremment le luxembourgeois, le français ou l'allemand.
